Capilano is officially located in one of our primary service areas of North Vancouver BC. However, the community of over 3100 residents (and growing) has its own unique characteristics that tie together what Greater Vancouver’s “North Shore” is all about. Some may go as far as to call Capilano the heart of North Vancouver. We’re OK with that.
The characteristics vary from North Vancouver in both household type and suburban planning. These distinguishing features impact landscape design. For instance, there is greater population density in Capilano, with over 1800 residents per square kilometer. Landscaping features may have to better factor in proximity to neighbors and public spaces. Meanwhile, median household age is more mature and more likely to be married, which can also factor into landscaping service preferences. Then there’s the topography which varies between the two versions of Capilano.
The northwest district of Upper Capilano encompasses the slopes beneath Grouse Mountain. The topography is defined by thick evergreens that embellish the ravines that bookend the Capilano River, along with Mackay and Mosquito Creeks. Somehow, amidst this burly vegetation, residential properties have persisted and continue to pop up along the area’s quiet windy roads. Existing and emerging communities include Grousewoods, Cleveland, Canyon Heights, Handsworth, Highlands and Edgemont. Each are faced with their own set of topographic and co-occurring challenges, ranging from significant gradient to high impact wind zones. This is where the difference between landscaping and landscape design comes into play. Only the latter can create a sustainable oasis amidst Upper Capilano’s unique topography.
Residential communities are much more bustling in the western gateway into the District. There are several mature residential neighborhoods in Capilano that are bounded by the Capilano River, the City of North Vancouver, the Squamish First Nation, and the industrial oceanfront below. The landscape design needs of single detached family homes and townhouses must factor in not only traditional elements (slope, soil composition, wind direction, etc.) but also consider densification and corresponding noise pollution, privacy, and even security. Once again we see how landscape design is called upon, versus basic Capilano landscaping services.
